We all know that a unique handbag or t-shirt can make the perfect outfit, but when do some fashion designs cross the line from unique to crazy?
That is the question most designers are dealing with nowadays, as even classic fashion houses try to reach out to the new generation by being as quirky and as crazy as possible.
This ‘out-there’ trend has created some absolutely insane fashion pieces that attempt to walk the fine line between interesting and garish.
Here are 5 of the best fashion designs that are both weird and wonderful, and serve as prime examples of how tempered innovation in fashion can yield both unique and stylish results that are eye-catching for all the right reasons.
Fashion Designs #1. Diane Von Furstenberg’s Clock Circle Box Clutch Bag
Charming and quirky without being too overpowering, this DVF clutch is large and eye-catching enough to be the centrepiece of an outfit but not so crazy as to distract from your ensemble.
Handbags are important as an accessory, and this bag works because it uses being large and clumsy to its advantage.
Fashion Designs #2. Solar Powered Sunglasses
An iPhone goes well with any outfit but as any modern woman knows, keeping your phone charged all day while surfing the internet and fielding calls can be impossible. Enter solar powered sunglasses, showcased by designers Hyun-Joong Kim and Kwang-Seok Jeong.
While they are not the sleekest of frames, these useful designer sunglasses both protect your eyes from UVA/B light and function as mini solar panels, and in bright light are efficient enough to run and charge small electronic devices like a phone, iPod or camera.
Fashion Designs #3. Phillips Mood Sensitive Bubelle Dress
Named by TIME as the fashion invention of the year in 2007, this dress was made by electronics giant Phillips to serve one purpose: letting people know how you are feeling.
The inner layer of the Bubelle dress is made up of biometric sensors that attempt to analyse how you are feeling via a variety of measures like heartbeat and body heat. The color of the dress then changes to help convey how you are feeling, like green for calm or red for angry.
Fashion Designs #4. Dawn Ellam’s Wooden Eco-Jeans
These skinny jeans might seem a strange choice for fashion creations you must see to believe, and to be sure they only seem incredible once you learn what they are made from: wood. Indeed, these seemingly normal jeans were made by Fashion student Dawn Ellams who created them from eucalyptus trees.
The pulp from the trees is boiled down and mashed into a stringy material which is then spun into yarn. Before you worry, there is no chance of getting any splinters from the jeans – in fact they are even softer than traditional cotton.
More importantly for Dawn, the jeans are eco-friendly: they are made from sustainable materials and use less water, less dangerous chemicals and have a smaller carbon footprint than traditional jeans.
Fashion Designs #5. Marlous de Roode ‘s Handbags Without Hands
We all have items that we need to carry around with us, but nowadays our hands are often busy texting and doing other things.
Innovative designer Marlous de Roode used this idea and ran with it to create these designer handbags that leave you hands free by attaching them to your upper arms. They mightn’t go with every outfit, but they beautiful fit to the contours of our bodies and will certainly stand out in a crowd.
