Living in Perfect Balance Between Home and Work

Perfect Balance Between Work and HomeEvery one’s  lifestyles have changed in the last few decades, and unfortunately multi-tasking is an everyday occurrence.

Most of us are busy juggling a career and a home, all the time striving to achieve a perfect balance between the two.

The fact that the lines separating these two worlds have blurred almost to the point of disappearing, makes it very difficult to maintain a healthy balance.

First of all, we need to reconcile to the fact that every day cannot be divided into exact halves with one half each reserved exclusively for work and home.

A deadline or a crucial deal may mean that one has to spend a couple hours more in the office one day. In such an event, one should compensate for their personal commitments on weekends.

The key to a harmonious life lies in finding happiness and satisfaction in what you do.

There are five important factors to keep in mind to ensure that you function smoothly at home and at the work place:

  • Effective Time Management

Never try to do too much. There are only so many things that you can do in a day, and it is essential that you recognize your limits and stay within them.

Being disorganized only leads to more stress. Prioritize tasks both at home and in the office.

Do the crucial things first and only then turn your attention to other less important matters.

At home, make sure that the duties are shared between you and your partner.

Accept help from friends and family.

Your friends might watch the kids on a weekend while you do the same for them the following weekend.

Draw up a calendar and every morning note down the things that you have to “absolutely get done” and a lot realistic time slots for each task.

Drop all unnecessary things from your list, at home and in the office.

  • Job Satisfaction

It is extremely important that you like what you do and are willing to manage the duties and responsibilities entrusted to you.

If this is not the case, then you could talk to your supervisor, and see, if you can get assigned elsewhere within the company, where you will be able to make a significant contribution without being unhappy about it.

Take a good look at your company’s work policies, and you are sure to discover something that will help you negotiate a different deal.

If all else fails, then it might be time for you to start looking for a new employer who might be offering what you are looking for.

  •  Avoid Taking Work Home

The advent of technology makes it very easy to succumb to the temptation of taking work home. Make it a point to finish work in the office.

If you are getting late and find that you still have a couple of tasks to be completed for the day, first see if they can wait till the next morning.

If yes, then let it wait. You can even choose to make an exception and come in half an hour early the next morning, but ensure that work always stays in the office.

  • Take Regular Breaks From Work

Take some time to enjoy life - stop and smell the flowers, enjoy the sunset, do something fun and exciting.

Go on a vacation with your family, and do stuff that you have always wanted to do, but kept putting off.

A vacation doesn’t mean you have to be off work for a week or two. What matters is the quality of personal time, not the quantity.

Even if it is just a long weekend, you will be surprised at how refreshed and rejuvenated you will be.

Make sure that you do not take with you anything remotely connected with work such as a laptop, wireless Internet, or other such gadgets.

  • Always Stay Fit and Healthy

Only if you are fit and healthy will you be mentally and physically agile to meet each day with confidence.

Your exercise regime can take anything from 10-45 minutes. What is important is that after you exercise, you must feel all revved up.

If you are not a morning person, then exercise in the evenings after work.

It could be a brisk walk or a short jog; a round of yoga or Pilates; or even 20 minutes dance.

Do whatever it takes to recharge you. Developing a hobby is also very good for mental stimulation and provides you with a change from the mundane.

Try following these guidelines and adopt a positive outlook on life. You will be surprised at the results!
