Love Versus Career: Can You Have Both?

love vs careerAs anyone who has managed a busy career can tell you, professional life is never easy. Finding the time to pursue a love life as well can feel nigh on impossible.

Many people today are left asking if they can really have both: love and career?

The good news is that the answer is yes. It is achievable to combine a love relationship and a successful career, it just requires a bit of understanding, determination and planning.

For anyone trying to strike a balance between the personal and the professional, here are some tips on smoothing out the process.

Set Boundaries

It’s important to set clear boundaries between the two different areas in your life. This applies both when you’re looking for a new relationship and when you’re maintaining a current one.

While it’s not always easy, it’s important to set clear times for leaving the office in the evening. This means leaving yourself plenty of time to go out and meet new people, or if you’re already in a relationship, allocating plenty of time to spend together as a couple.

Pull Your Weight

One of the biggest frustrations people experience whilst dating a career-minded person is the feeling that their other half simply doesn’t pull their weight. Even something as simple as doing the dishes or offering to cook a few times a week can make all the difference and show your love and appreciation.

Divvying up the tasks might seem juvenile at first but it does help clarify exactly what each person is responsible for and can prevent arguments in the future.

Keep Your Love and Carrer Separate

loveIf you organize to go on a date with someone, the last thing you ought to do is switch on your Blackberry at the dinner table.

You need to be strict with yourself and your colleagues about what time you are available to take work-related calls and what times are simply out of the question.

It’s not uncommon for career-oriented couples to both enjoy working to some extent, but make sure you set boundaries between work time and love time.

Don’t Bring Your Work Home With You

This is less to do with physical work and more about the stress associated with your career. If you have had a particularly stressful day in the office, don’t take your frustrations out on your partner.

Equally, if you’re going on a date for the first time be careful to show an interest in topics other than work, work and more work!

Try Dating Online

For career-driven people, the real challenge when looking for love is simply finding the time. When you are working long hours in the office, it’s difficult to find the motivation to cook dinner, let alone get ready for a date.

One of the ways that many busy professionals have found success in their search for love is by looking online. Free dating and relationship sites like eHarmony allow even the biggest workaholics to discover likeminded, understanding singles all in their local area.

You are absolutely right! Our lives got so busy that it’s hard to have it all: a great career, good relationship, children and everything else. It seems like quite a challenge, but where there is a will there is a way!

Hi Joe, I totally agree with you. If you want something bad enough, you will get it. Thanks for stopping by!

    Hi Elana,
Some days I work between 12-16 hours and my girlfriend hates it. I can understand her frustration, but I am working to provide for us. Oh, and I met her on Plenty of Fish, so I do recommend that if you are too busy then try online dating.

Hi Justin, I heard about Plenty of Fish and it sounds like a good alternative to other dating sites. Thanks for your insight and have a great new year!

I’ve never had a career that’s made me so busy that I couldn’t find time to date. However, I have dated busy career women before and I have to completely agree that the blackberry needs to stay off. That can get annoying when that goes off.

I’ve done the online dating scene before and it’s worked well for me. I’ve met a lot of great women off those sites. In fact, I’m married right now because of one of those sites. It can be a great way to meet a wide range of people.

I agree with you Steve, where there is a will – there is a way. Thanks for stopping by!

I agree always try to keep your love and work separately and don’t forget to take him/her outside for a change.

That’s funny, nothing can break true love!
