Doctor Internet: Why the Web Can Help Lower Your Healthcare Costs

cost of healthcareThese days, people are using the Internet to aid their lives in a dizzying number of ways.

The world is already full of people using “Doctor Internet” to diagnose their own symptoms.

It makes sense then that people would naturally gravitate towards using the Internet to help in other ways related to healthcare – particularly since just about everything is available for purchase online nowadays.

Rising healthcare costs for the past several years punish our nation in multiple ways from senior citizens to families with kids and mean lees money in our pockets.

So how can we help lower our healthcare costs to have more money to pay for food, rent and other necessities?

Here are a few examples of the various benefits of purchasing healthcare products online that can save you a big chunk of money and valuable time.

Online Pharmacies

There are many online pharmacies these days that will allow you to purchase medicines right from your home.

This is a massive benefit since you don’t have to do a lot of scheduling to get the medicine you need.

Instead, you can have it shipped right to your door.

With the right prescription from a doctor and dealing only with reputable online pharmacies, you can avoid the process of having to head down to a local pharmacy, give them the prescription, and then wait around for hours until you can get what you need.

The convenience of the Internet has eliminated the need for such approaches. Believe it or not, some insurance companies will even give you your medicine at a discounted price, especially if it’s on auto-refill, e.g. birth control pills, if you buy it on line from their designated online pharmacy.

Buying Bulk

Another benefit is the fact that you can order medicine, first aid kits, vitamins, contacts, and other medical items in larger quantities.

This can really drive your healthcare costs way down. For example, if you know that you’re going to need Vitamin C for an entire year, there’s no reason to buy it all at once, or to trust that the local stores in your area will have enough to cover a year (their prices will probably make such continuous buying not worth the expense).

Instead, you can just order what you need in bulk on the Internet, get all of it delivered right to your door—usually for extremely reduced prices, since online distributors can often get the stuff much cheaper than retail chains can, especially in bulk.

Saving with Convenience

Beyond just reducing stress about saving money and buying what you need easily—stress which can increase healthcare costs by itself given the health side effects—convenience can help you save money too.

Think of all the times you will no longer be needing to drive all over the place looking for what you need and paying retailers a fake sort of “convenience” for the privilege of wasting gas.

Instead, you can do it all from your home, and save on gas and stress while you do it.

Lowering Healthcare Costs on Eyecare

The Internet has taken on a special role in distribution of lenses and glasses—a particular niche market that has benefited a great deal from online services.

Sites like LensesOnline allow you to order contact lenses online and in bulk, making it possible to not only order lenses without having to leave the couch, but also order automatically and on an ongoing basis.

This can really help you reduce stress and stay on top of the problem without needing to micromanage it.

Hi Elena! I see CJ already beat me to my question. My health insurance company keeps raising my premiums every six months or so, and it’s just getting out of hand. I’m very healthy and on no prescription medications. I only go to the doctor once a year for my physical and yet they seem not to notice. I’m highly frustrated with it, and if you have any information on it, I’d love to hear it! If not, no problem! I know there are millions of others in this same crappy boat! Hopefully I can find something else soon!

The web can make it more expensive, too, because lots of people self diagnose as you mentioned and then freak out thinking something terrible is wrong with them when it’s not really. But the internet always holds great money saving powers!

Good point, Daisy! Everyone should be definitely cautious about self-diagnosing. Thanks for your insight!
